The 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings have been officially announced. Among them, Tsinghua University ranks first in Asia and also holds the top position in mainland China, standing at 12th place globally. Peking University closely follows, ranking 14th worldwide.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluate research-intensive universities based on 18 performance indicators. In 2024, it is the 20th edition of these rankings, featuring 1,904 universities from 108 countries and regions (up from 1,799 universities last year).
Asia saw the highest participation, with 737 universities taking part in the rankings. The number of mainland Chinese universities in the top 400 of the world rankings has increased from 18 last year to 30 this year. Mainland China has a total of 86 universities in the rankings, ranking fifth in terms of the number of universities listed among all countries and regions.
Specifically, apart from Tsinghua University and Peking University, the rankings of other mainland Chinese universities in the top 100 of the world university rankings are as follows:
• Shanghai Jiao Tong University: Moved up from 52nd place last year to 43rd place. • Fudan University: Moved up from 51st place last year to 44th place. • Zhejiang University: Moved up from 67th place last year to tie for 55th place. • University of Science and Technology of China: Moved up from 74th place last year to 57th place. • Nanjing University: Moved up from a tied 95th place last year to 73rd place.
Furthermore, Hong Kong remains one of the most concentrated regions for top-tier universities, with five universities in the top 100 worldwide. The University of Oxford in the United Kingdom has retained its top position for the 8th consecutive year.
According to the official description of the Times Higher Education World University Rankings, the new methodology for this year covers five primary indicators: teaching, research quality, research environment, international outlook, and industry engagement. There are a total of 18 carefully calibrated sub-indicators, with 5 additional ones compared to the previous year. Three citation indicators have been added under the primary indicator of research quality, one patent indicator under the industry engagement primary indicator, and one outbound exchange student indicator under the international outlook primary indicator.
Phil Baty, Chief International Affairs Officer of Times Higher Education, commented, "In the 20th edition of the World University Rankings, mainland China has seen an increase from just four universities in the top 200 in 2004 to 13 this year, with six of them entering the top 60. Tsinghua University and Peking University are getting closer to the global top 10."
